International Education Week
In celebration of International Education Week (November 13-17), Consulate Merida teamed up with U.S.-owned Renfro Campeche to promote international educational exchanges. The maquiladora, which annually produces twelve million “dozen pairs” of socks for companies such as Nike and Fruit of the Loom, is the largest sock manufacturer in Mexico and Central America. With approximately 1,500 workers, the factory also is the largest employer in Campeche after the state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos.
Renfro Campeche and the Consulate co-hosted a poster contest for children of the factory workers. Fifty lucky students, chosen by lottery, submitted posters that conveyed the importance of education and the partnership between Mexico and the United States. On November 15, the Consular Section Chief, Vice Consul, and local staff traveled to Campeche for the award ceremony and reception for government officials, parents, students, and local press. Six winners received gift certificates to buy school supplies and a trip to Chichen Itza.
