Report of Birth Abroad
The birth of a child in Mexico to a U.S. citizen parent (s) should be reported as soon as possible in order to obtain a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240) which will serve later as evidence of the child’s U.S. citizenship. Please call (011)(52)(999) 942-5700 extention 5722, 5723 or 5752 in order to schedule an appointment and to confirm the documents needed to apply. A personal appearance of both parents with the child is mandatory.
The following documentation is required:
Child’s original Mexican birth certificate
U.S. citizen parent (s) proof of citizenship: U.S. passport or original birth certificate (in this case also bring an official photo ID: driver’s license, state ID, armed forces ID, etc.)
Parents’ original marriage certificate. If either or both parents are divorced, original proof of termination must be presented. If parents are unwed or were married after the child’s birth, they must provide sufficient evidence of their relationship prior to the approximate time of conception (for instance: dated photos, letters, etc.).
Parents’ official photo ID’s (passports, driver’s licenses, state ID, IFE card, SEP school certificates, etc)
Pre-natal care and birth evidence: medical bills, lab test results, ultrasound images, hospital certificate of birth, etc.
Evidence of U.S. citizen parent (s) physical presence in the United States. Examples of such evidence are tax returns, mail, school documents, dated photographs, bills (rent, utilities), Social Security Itemized Statement of Earnings, etc.
If applicable, parents' Mexican tourist/resident visa: FMT, FM3, FM2 or equivalent
The cost of the CRBA is $65 USD or the peso equivalent.
NOTE: Even though both parents may be U.S. citizens, a child born in Mexico is also a Mexican citizen through birth in Mexico and may be required to enter and leave Mexico with a Mexican passport. You may obtain information regarding Mexican passport issuance by contacting the Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE).
